The Camino de Santiago in León

The Camino Francés crosses the province from east to west, from Sahagún to Villafranca del Bierzo, passing the Cruz de Ferro.

Area: Provincia de León

The Camino Francés crosses León province through very different stages: the plains of Tierra de Campos, the city of León, the moorlands of the Maragatería and the mountains of El Bierzo.

Key stops

  • Sahagún and Mansilla de las Mulas, on the eastern approach.
  • León, worth at least an afternoon.
  • Astorga and Rabanal del Camino, before the climb.
  • Cruz de Ferro, at about 1,500 m, the highest point of the Camino Francés, where pilgrims leave a stone.
  • Ponferrada and Villafranca del Bierzo, already in El Bierzo.

If you are not walking the whole Camino, many stages work as single-day hikes.
