Picos de Europa in León

Valdeón, Caín and the Cares Trail: the León side of Spain's first national park.

Area: Valdeón y Sajambre
View on map ↗

The León side of the Picos de Europa National Park holds the Valdeón and Sajambre valleys, with stone villages, cave-aged cheeses and high mountains always in view.

Highlights

  • Posada de Valdeón, the valley’s main village and a base for hikes.
  • Caín, the starting point of the famous Cares Trail, which runs through the gorge to Poncebos in Asturias (about 12 km each way).
  • The viewpoints and villages of the valley, a good plan for easier days.

The mountains deserve respect: check the forecast, wear proper footwear and check trail conditions at park offices before setting out.
